Tibetan Buddhist Practice Days & Major Festivals (2026–2028)

In Tibetan tradition, lunar phase days (8th, 10th, 15th, 25th, 29th, 30th) are not superstition about “lucky lottery dates”—they are shared monthly bells reminding busy households to pause, practice generosity, and dedicate peace.

Astronomical & Practice FAQ

Common Questions About the Tibetan Lunar Calendar

When are Losar (Tibetan New Year) and Saga Dawa Düchen in 2026 and 2027?

Under the canonical Men-Tsee-Khang Phugpa system, in 2026 (Tibetan Year 2153, Male Fire Horse) Losar falls on February 18, 2026 and Saga Dawa Düchen falls on May 31, 2026. In 2027 (Tibetan Year 2154, Female Fire Sheep, which includes an intercalary Leap 2nd Month), Losar falls on February 7, 2027 and Saga Dawa Düchen falls on June 18, 2027.

Why does the Tibetan lunar calendar sometimes skip a date or repeat a date twice?

Because the 1447 CE Phugpa Kālacakra astronomy tracks the true angular motion of the Moon relative to each solar dawn: when a lunar tithi ends before sunrise and the next also finishes before the following sunrise, that number is omitted (chad, ཆད), and any observance is combined onto the preceding solar day; when a single lunar tithi spans two consecutive sunrises, the date is doubled (lhag, ལྷག), with major practice held on the second day.

Is the Tibetan calendar the same as the Chinese lunar calendar?

No. Although both are lunisolar calendars, Tibetan Phugpa astronomy derives from the Indian Kālacakra Tantra with its own epoch, intercalary leap-month placement, and true-moon tithi omission/duplication rules—so Tibetan 8th, 10th, 15th, and 25th practice days frequently differ from Chinese lunar dates by one day or an entire month.
